Coney Dog Sauce Recipe

I received some immediate requests to post this after the Tree's Drive-In post yesterday.  Mom's homemade Coney Dog sauce could rival any Drive-In or Root Beer Stand I've ever found.  I know the sugar will throw you for a loop, but just try it and see for yourself.

Ingredients:

1 1/4 lbs    Hamburger, browned
1/2 cup      Sugar
1/2 cup      Chili Powder
1/2 cup      Ketchup
1 1/2 cup   Water

Brown the hamburger and then add the rest of the ingredients into the skillet and simmer for one hour.  Stir occassionally.  Serve on hot dogs.  This can also be frozen until needed.

This was a family favorite for hot dogs.  Each person added whatever they wanted to top the chili, I loved it just like it is on the dog! Don't forget the fries.  Your kids will love this.  The recipe itself is quite simple, but with unbelievable results.

Of course with a recipe for Dogs like this you could end up with the results to the right.  Mind you he was more startled from me taking his picture at the time than he was from eating the Coney Dog, either way . . . what a face!  He enjoyed getting that dirty, believe me!  It was still worth it for my wife and I to clean up just to see him go after'em.  I'd do it again in a heart beat.  Besides I get to eat them too . . .

I hope you enjoy these during your next cookout.  Your family will love you for it!

  4. I live in Berne and work at Tree's Drive In. This is not their recipe for coney sauce. I have made it enough times that I know it by heart.

  5. Hey Anon,
You're correct. I don't know what Tree's coney dog sauce recipe is. I apologize if I made it sound that way but I do start off the post stating that this is my mom's recipe and that it can rival what Tree's offers. Which I believe it does.

That said, I still stop in at Tree's every time I'm in town as long as its open - I love Tree's drive in!

  6. 1/2 cup of chili powder seems like a LOT of chili powder! Is this correct?
