30th Anniversary Goombay Festival - August 26 - 28, 2011

Can you believe that its already been 30 years that we've held the Goombay Festival in the area.  The Festival is going on now, so check out the links below to find out more!

GoomBay is a three day African-Caribbean festival, located in downtown Asheville, that lives up to its West African name, meaning rhythm or drum, with rhythmic sounds and colorful sights. The Goombay dancers wear colorful costumes and high headdresses topped with feathers. Often times, grotesque masks help to enhance the free and exotic movements.

Two stages, 3 days of entertainment from jazz, soul, gospel, reggae to stiltwalkers, drummers and a parade, this is a Goombay you won't want to miss. Festivities start on Friday, August 26th at 12:00pm. Live entertainment from 12:00pm til 10:00pm on Friday and Saturday... and Sunday begins with a worship service at 10:00am and ends with a dove release and the closing ceremonies at 6:00 pm. Don’t forget the delicious and exotic foods and amazing local wares that will be available from a variety of vendors (long-time favorites and new) throughout the festival area, as well.

Children's Area will be opened from 1:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturday Only. It will be located at the Ray Auditorium.
