The Fire at Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack

The fire was on my tongue, in my mouth, on my lips - it seemed to be everywhere!  I just want to thank the order taker for suggesting that I order the medium wings on my first trip to Rocky's!  So apparently medium = nuclear hot in Rocky speak.  Seriously, I thought I could handle spice until I got into my second of three wings and flicked a little chicken in my eye (don't even ask!), started crying, wiping my nose and pretending everything was fine.  I can't wait to go back again.

The menu and the hot flaming chicken
After the spice in the eye incident I made a trip to the restroom and saw the sign (shown below) on the bathroom door.  They do give you fair warning with the important issues!

Take heed to the caution!
I've been wanting to try Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack for some time.  It was on my wish list but having Sunday and Monday as my weekend, it can be difficult to get to some restaurants.  So I finally had a day off during Rocky hours of business!

There seemed to be lots of choices and it was 'thighday' to boot.  So after a short conference with the order taker (who was very helpful) I went with three wings ($3.95) medium heat, fries, corn pudding and lemonade.  The sides are $1.75 each and the lemonade is fresh squeezed and $2.00 per glass.

I took my number and my lemonade, helped myself to napkins and flatware and found my seat.  The wait wasn't long and I was soon looking down at some Rocky wings.  Interestingly they have a dry rub on them which I didn't expect.  I dove right in and was immediately introduced to Rocky's claim to fame.  They were really really hot but they were also really really addicting.  I couldn't stop if I tried at this point.  I only kept chewing forward through sheer force of will along with blue cheese, fries, corn pudding and lots and lots of lemonade.  I used everything at my disposal to keep going even the slices of white bread that are placed under the wings!

The total chicken experience
I have vowed to go back and tried the chicken route of mild (yes, I'm hanging my head in shame right now).  I want to taste a little more of the chicken too and see what Rocky is up to back there.  Its not that I don't trust him.  It's more a point of being nosey and loving food.

In case you were wondering.  The corn pudding was delicious and the fries were hot, crispy and good.  The lemonade was great also!  This was a total chicken experience that is worth repeating.

Rocky's has an interesting history.  I pulled the following from their website.
A little more than a year after closing its doors in Arden, local Rocky Lindsley’s hot chicken shack is finally back and set to re-open on July 1 in its new West Asheville location at 1455 Patton Avenue.  Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack first opened its doors in 2009 and quickly gained a cult following as word spread about a hole-in-the-wall that served mercilessly hot chicken with a ghost chili sauce that was rumored to induce psychedelic experiences.
In fact, the shack became so popular that many evenings, late-comers and repeat offenders were greeted by a closed door and Rocky’s hand-written note: “Sorry, ran out of chicken.”  Demand became so great, that Rocky’s one-man operation couldn’t keep up. In April 2010, Rocky closed the shack to avoid burnout. What he didn’t anticipate was the public outcry (and downright begging) that ensued.
Fortunately for Asheville’s hot-chicken lovers, Rocky’s devout following included a former restaurateur and retail designer who partnered with Rocky to re-open the shack with a more sustainable business model. Six months after closing his doors, a plan to reopen them was in place.
Rocky and business partner Lauren Cundiff and their crew have spent the past several months renovating the new shack, installing pressure fryers, and researching home-cooked sides, local brews and wines. Although the new building seats over 100 and has an expanded menu of sides and drinks, the heart of the shack—face-melting chicken—remains exactly the same.
Rocky’s hot chicken is still mercilessly hot (with Plain for the timid), served three ways (breast, legs or wings) with pickles on white bread to soak up the addictive sauce.
Rocky's is part of the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association for all those of you keeping track of which independents are part of AIR.
