Grove "Bark" Inn Hosts the Gingerbread Doghouse Competition Today

Grand Prize Winner of the Gingerbread Doghouse Competition
On a clever take off the Nationally popular National Gingerbread House Competition™, The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa hosted the first Gingerbread Doghouse Competition.  The Resort partnered with local animal welfare organizations such as Animal Compassion Network, Asheville Humane Society, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Humane Alliance and Paws on a Mission to create a one of a kind fun loving, pet friendly, seasonally appropriate Asheville event.
Judges working hard to score each Doghouse
This fundraising event, held at the Resort's historic country club, will benefit the local pet charities mentioned above.  Similar to The National Gingerbread House Competition™, contestants were invited to build a doghouse made entirely of edible materials - with a twist - entries must be constructed and composed completely of dog-edible materials. A panel of judges selected winners in each category and display attendees voted for the "People's Choice" award.

How it works:

Build a gingerbread house.  It’s simple—the more houses we have, the more money we make for the organizations and the more impressive and fun the display becomes. Make it a family, church, business, school or social occasion and have some creative holiday fun designing and building your entry!

Other doghouses promoted fun loving pet themes
Sponsor a gingerbread house.  If you’re not the baking and decorating type but still want to participate, think about sponsoring a house for the display. For a small fee, all of which will be donated to the organization of your choice, your name or your business name will be showcased with the entry for the length of the display. It’s a great way to show your support and get your name in the public eye!

Doghouses are for sale to raise money for local animal charities
Sponsor the competition.  All of the creativity and hard work put into the houses by the competitors deserves to be rewarded, so help us by becoming a sponsor of the event itself. Sponsorship packages help with cash and/or goods and services prizes and also benefit the recipient organizations. Plus, we will make sure our sponsors get maximum publicity for their support in exchange!

Purchase a gingerbread house.  See a house you want to display at your home or business for the holiday season?  For a set fee, all of which goes to your choice from the recipient organizations, that gingerbread house can be yours—or your dog’s! Purchasers will also have their names showcased by the selected house for the duration of the display.

How it came about:

The idea started, as many great ideas do, on a walk in the woods. My friend, Linda Brown, and I were with the Hiking Hounds group from the Asheville Humane Society, tromping through Bent Creek discussing dogs, horses, jobs, and the like with fellow volunteers, when someone asked me what I did as the Special Events Manager for The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa.

Now, history has taught me that when talking to locals, the simplest and most effective response to that question is, “I do Gingerbread.” For 19 years, the National Gingerbread House Competition™ & Display has been a treasured and revered part of the holiday season in Asheville and at The Grove Park Inn. As I started to explain my various roles in that event and in others, a voice drifted in from the back of the hiking group, “I could really get into gingerbread if it were about dogs.”

And the rest, as they say, is history. With my Gingerbread experience and access to the most beautiful resort in Western North Carolina (now pet-friendly!), Linda’s culinary background and advice, and the fund-raising passion and expertise of Joe Grady, we are excited to present to you an event where dog lovers and owners can create canine-friendly gingerbread masterpieces to benefit area rescue groups and organizations.
