Meet Asheville's own Sow True Seed company

Sow True Seed is an Asheville based seed company that fits perfectly with the love of local in the region.  They are an open-pollinated, GMO-free vegetable, herb and flower seed company specializing in heirloom, certified organic, and traditional Southern Appalachia varieties. They offer a wide selection of vegetable seed, herb seed and flower seed, as well as garlic seed, sweet potato slips, seed potatoes, gift certificates and more. Sow True Seeds seeks to promote and foster community sustainability by helping to preserve our shared botanical heritage and seed a new era of sustainable culture and ecological wisdom.

Sow True Seed exclusively offers open-pollinated/non-hybrid and untreated seed. When saved and replanted, open-pollinated seed reproduces true to the original plant’s characteristics. Untreated seeds means that none of our seeds are coated with fungicides or chemicals of any kind. They grow and source a broad selection of traditional and adapted varieties from quality selective breeders, regional growers, small scale producers, and independently owned wholesale-suppliers.

Sow True Seed was founded in 2009 by business partners Carol Koury (Owner) and Peter Waskiewicz (Co-Founder) to serve home gardeners, market growers and the seed saving community at large. The company seeks to promote and foster community sustainability by helping to preserve our shared botanical heritage and seed a new era of sustainable culture and ecological wisdom.

Located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina at 146 Church Street, the Sow True Seed retail store at the warehouse offers all of the 400+ varieties of vegetable, herb and flower seed.  They also sell seasonal items such as seed potato, seed onion, asparagus crowns, and sweet potato slips in the Spring, and seed garlic in the fall.

Safe Seed Pledge
Sow True Seed is aligned with over 70 seed companies that have signed the Council for Responsible Genetics’ “Safe Seed Pledge” (reproduced below).  They feel that GMO varieties threaten botanical diversity through indiscriminate cross-pollination and the resulting abandonment of non-GMO, open-pollinated varieties. Participating companies have taken the pledge to not engage in the trade of genetically modified seed. Sow True Seed takes the pledge further by exclusively offering untreated, open-pollinated seed that can be reliably saved and replanted in the future.  They recognise that the unlimited production and distribution of open-pollinated seed is primary to the growth and endurance of sustainable, regional, farming communities. Sow True endorses the basic right of all the earth’s people to enjoy a safe, ethical and sovereign food production and distribution system.

The Safe Seed Pledge: “Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.”
